Essay topic 1979

Alex from a Clockwork Orange commits acts of murder, rape, violence, assault, theft, and many other criminal felonies. The reason we sympathize with Alex is because of what happens to him, in a nut shell he completely gets thrown into the worst situation ever. The conditioning that he receives makes him a simple husk, it took all personality from him, and the reason we like Alex our anti-hero is because he has so much fun committing rape and other assaults.  Although he is very evil you get attached to him because of his predicament, like when he gets stuck in the house with the man that he crippled and the man realizes that he is the one who ruined the man’s life.  And Alex is thus tortured for his wrongful act. We also feel bad for Alex when his former Droogs betray him and attack him and leave him for dead you feel sorry for Alex.

The author is using Alex to convey his thoughts of how society will end up due to the youthful anarchy.  By us sympathizing with Alex we agree with the author, but we also get shown the power of the government, when they are given to much power. You see corruption and violence and rape just like you see with the adolescents with in this novel. Alex is the main tool for burgess with our connection with Alex we would agree with anything that burgess throws at us as long as our hero/ anti-hero doesn’t get snuffed.

When being conditioned against music and rape you feel bad for Alex because of what they do to him they bind his eyes open until the sections of film finish. Alex describes this pain as the worst pain that he has ever felt and wants to stop because they are taking his most favorite thing in the world away from him. What burgess is trying to make do is place ourselves in Alex’s shoes and we can only feel terrible our level of sympathy for Alex again rises to higher levels. What burgess is doing with Alex is very unique for the novel because at one point you find yourself rooting for Alex and wanting him to succeed. But  remember my friends that Alex was cured.

Anthony Burgess

John Burgess Wilson (25 February 1917 – 22 November 1993) — who published under the pen name Anthony Burgess — was an English author, poet, playwright, composer, linguist, translator and critic. The dystopian satire A Clockwork Orange is Burgess’s most famous novel, though he dismissed it as one of his lesser works. It was adapted into a highly controversial 1971 film by Stanley Kubrick, which Burgess said was chiefly responsible for the popularity of the book. Burgess produced numerous other novels, including the Enderby quartet, and Earthly Powers. He was a prominent critic, writing acclaimed studies of classic writers such as William Shakespeare, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence and Ernest Hemingway. In 2008, The Times placed Burgess number 17 on their list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. Burgess was an accomplished musician and linguist. He composed over 250 musical works, including a first symphony around age 18, wrote a number of libretti, and translated, among other works, Cyrano de Bergerac, Oedipus the King and Carmen.

A socialistic society

in a clockwork orange the society within this dystopia is a socialistic society with very anarchy like tendencies. this means that everyone in the society has to work or they will end up in jail. that pushes alex to do his own thing as long as he can so he doesnt have to work.
I believe that  this is the best form of government and i like the way it works.

Droogs

I like how Anthony Burgess incorporates different languages into his literature, for example he uses the Russian, spanish and english language to create the new slang for young kids of the future.
